Botulinum Toxin (Botox)
What is Botulinum Toxin (Botox)?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin protein derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a purified substance extracted from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin block nerve signals to the targeted muscle. Without these signals, the muscle is unable to contract, resulting in a reduction of unwanted facial wrinkles and a smoother appearance.
The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to as “Botox” by patients, is a popular injectable treatment that temporarily reduces or eliminates fine lines and wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas include frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet around the eyes.
